On PS5, however, it feels like the player is running for me. My Madden 21 running game improved greatly on the PS4, my skill level exponentially increasing from previous games. It feels more methodical with your decision-making needing to be more intentional.
This isn’t a bad thing in the slightest, but bears mentioning as something that you’ll need to get used to. The pace of Madden 21 on PS5 feels more slowed down. I’m already hooked, and all it took was one offensive drive. I send the ball, which is caught by the tight end in the endzone for a touchdown. The snow even plays a part as he slows down ever so slightly to not slip while making his post route cut. Rather than running in a more robotic, fragmented manner, data from NFL Next Gen Stats allows his movement to be more true-to-life, running and moving like an actual human rather than a digital interpretation. The fluidity and smoothness of his movement is an impressive sight to behold. I take it for the first down and select my next play.Īnother passing play, I let the play develop. We’re mostly in it to play as the newly-signed free agents and rookies who were added to our favorite team during the off-season.
Obviously, I knew I’d play them at some point (how could I not?), but one of the titles I was looking forward to playing most was the next-gen version of Madden 21.Īs almost any steadfast Madden player can attest, not much changes from one year to the next with each annual release. I was pretty certain it was going to be graphically impressive with tons of quality-of-life features such as its lightning-fast loading times, but I wasn’t necessarily chomping at the bit to play any of the launch titles. Yet the product at launch is riddled with deficiencies and the incremental additions aren’t significant enough to warrant a purchase recommendation from me.During the build-up to its launch - before eventually making its way into my loving arms - I didn’t have too many expectations for the PS5. Madden NFL 21 isn’t necessarily a bad game it will improve over time with updates. That said, it feels as though EA Sports has done everything they can with this generation of consoles and is merely on cruise control until they have the technical capacity to do so much more.

I have to give EA some credit here as folks who purchase Madden NFL 21 for PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, are able to upgrade their copy to PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X at no extra cost. A new generation of consoles is right around the corner and the timing couldn’t be better. While it seems like the Madden franchise is trending in the wrong direction, the future remains bright for EA Sports virtual gridiron game. Zone coverage doesn’t seem as tight right now either, but I imagine this will all be tweaked after launch.
Likewise, on the defensive side of the ball, it feels the same while sacking the QB and pulling off interceptions is a little more challenging. Yet aside from getting used to what works well and what doesn’t, Madden’s passing and running mechanics remain safely intact. Corner routes aren’t as dominant as they were and running to the edge ain’t exactly a walk in the park. Some blitzes don’t come in as fast as they did previously. That said, some of the things that worked really well in Madden 20, don’t work as well this time around.
